Pallet sizes are not arbitrary. They have evolved over decades to optimize truck and container loading, warehouse racking compatibility, and international trade logistics. Choosing the right pallet size can save your business significant money in shipping costs, warehouse space utilization, and product damage reduction. Here is your comprehensive guide to standard pallet sizes used around the world.

The GMA Pallet: 48 x 40 inches

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) pallet is the undisputed king of the pallet world in North America. At 48 inches long by 40 inches wide, it accounts for approximately 35% of all new pallets produced in the United States. This pallet is designed to fit perfectly in standard 53-foot trailers (you can fit exactly 20 pallets per truck in a double-stacked configuration), standard warehouse racking systems, and grocery and retail distribution centers. The GMA pallet is the default choice for most domestic shipping in the U.S. and Canada.

The EUR Pallet: 1200 x 800 mm (47.24 x 31.50 inches)

The European pallet, managed by the European Pallet Association (EPAL), is the most widely used pallet in Europe. Its dimensions are optimized for European truck and rail transport standards. If you are exporting to Europe or operating within European supply chains, EUR pallets are essential. They are also popular in parts of Asia and Africa where European trade influence is strong.

ISO Standard Sizes

The International Organization for Standardization recognizes six standard pallet sizes: 1219 x 1016 mm (48 x 40 in) used in North America, 1200 x 1000 mm (47.24 x 39.37 in) used in Europe and Asia, 1200 x 800 mm (47.24 x 31.50 in) the EUR pallet used in Europe, 1067 x 1067 mm (42 x 42 in) used in North America, Australia, and Europe, 1100 x 1100 mm (43.30 x 43.30 in) used in Asia-Pacific, and 800 x 600 mm (31.50 x 23.62 in) the half-size EUR pallet.

Specialty and Custom Sizes

Beyond standard sizes, many industries use custom pallet dimensions tailored to their specific products. The automotive industry often uses 48 x 45 inch pallets. The chemical industry frequently uses 48 x 48 inch pallets for drum storage. The beverage industry sometimes uses 36 x 36 inch pallets for specific can and bottle configurations.

At Chicago Pallet Solutions, we manufacture custom pallets to any specification. Whether you need an odd size for a unique product, a reinforced pallet for heavy loads, or a combination pallet with special features, our team can design and build exactly what you need.

Choosing the Right Size

When selecting a pallet size, consider your product dimensions and how they stack, the transportation mode you will use, your warehouse racking system requirements, whether you ship domestically or internationally, and the industry standards your customers expect. The right pallet size eliminates wasted space, reduces shipping costs, and prevents product damage. Our team at Chicago Pallet Solutions can help you analyze your specific requirements and recommend the optimal pallet size for your operation.
